Not Too Late for Christmas Music
Posted on Wed Dec 26 2007

Actually, the 12 days of Christmas continue from Dec. 25 through Jan. 6 (Epiphany). Got an email from my son Joel about some Christmas music he recorded. Can't exactly put a news article on the church home page, but a blog seems an appropriate place to 'spread the word.'

Jeff Rakes, Pastor of Worship and Administration

Friends & Family,
Merry Christmas! Just wanted to send out a note letting you all know about the free Christmas music I've been putting up on my website over the past month or so. Each week for the past 5 weeks (leading up to today) I've been recording and releasing a Christmas track on my website
@ http://www.joelrakes.com/free-christmas-music
On this page there's also some not-as-good recordings (Volume 1) I did for Christmas last year.

This year's group of songs (Volume 2) are mostly my voice and a slew of acoustic guitar and banjo tracks. I also added some piano here and there, my dad added some piano on the first song, and you may even hear mouse clicks, sleighbells, and a fake trumpet at times.

festive.mood.inducing.songs.volume.2:
1. No Mo' Ho Ho Ho (original song)
2. O Come All Ye Faithful
3. Go Tell It On The Mountain
4. Winter Wonderland
5. Lost Christmas (original song)

The first track, "No Mo' Ho Ho Ho" is a silly song I wrote about a fictional (...obviously) scenario where Santa is really depressed because he isn't needed anymore - because people just buy their presents instead with online shopping. I entered this song in a contest put on by one of my favorite musicians, Sufjan Stevens called "The Great Sufjan Song Xmas Exchange Contest." I wasn't selected as the winner by Sufjan, but out of over 650 song entries my song was selected as one of his favorite 36 songs - which was quite exciting! One of the perks of this was having my song streamed off his website. You can read more about this if you're interested @   http://www.joelrakes.com/blog/2007/12/20/guess-what-sufjan-song-xmas-xchange-related/

I hope you all had an awesome Christmas day, please enjoy this small seasonal music offering :)
